Sales vacancies and digging a little deeper
As a salesman there are an infinite number of options regarding what to sell and what sales vacancies to consider. Ultimately, I would suggest the company is what you should look at rather than just the products. Join the wrong company, and it doesn't matter how good the products are if the company fails, it can be a nightmare for you career and highly stressful starting all over again.
Here's my top 5 tips when looking at sales vacancies to make sure you get it right.
Visit companies house website and check out the company and it's directors. If you look carefully you will be able to see their accounts, turnover, profits and so on. If they are a dying company putting on a brave face, maybe even looking for a top salesman to get them out of a mess you'll soon find out.
Speak to their customers and find out what they think about the company. This will quickly give you a feel for how respected they are in the market. If there's been a change of fortune, 9 times out of 10 the customers will feel it and notice. If several customers are not overly happy perhaps you should be looking for other sales vacancies to invest time in.
Check out your new potential boss. There are several ways you could gain this information. As above, customers may be able to point you to ex employees, although be careful, an ex employee may have been pushed because they were no good. They won't like your new manager, but perhaps more because of themselves than the manager. Some customers may remember your new potential manager as a rep. Ultimately your view of an employee is largely dependent on your relationship with your direct manager. If you can check it out in advance it's worth it.
Call the company and pose as a potential customer. If your customer experience is an unhappy one, this may indicate a poor sales set up and not something you wish to join. Good sales companies should have in place procedures to handle new customers professionally, if you don't sense this as a customer think twice before following through on sales vacancies like this.
Always look at several sales vacancies at once in order to compare against your own criteria. If you are a typically optimistic sales person, any one vacancy can look good when viewed in isolation. Look a broad spread to gain a more balanced view for each.
In my early years selling I made poor decisions when it came to filtering sales vacancies primarily due to a natural optimism cloaking problems with prospective employers. Follow the tips above and make a more informed choice.
