Sales of any form into medical related industries can broadly be described as medical sales. Looking deeper into these industries, medical sales alter greatly. For example, in pharmaceuticals ‘ethical sales’ often replaces the term medical sales. This is due to the stiff guidelines associated with the selling of prescribed drugs. The tough regulations run into the marketing of such products, so these jobs would not be suitable to the stereotypical salesperson!

Those who work as pharmaceutical medical representatives may be labelled as any of the following job titles: territory manager; territory business manager; or, territory sales manager. An exception to the rule is a famous company with ideals for a gentler approach to sales, who desire for their employees to be named ‘medical salesmen’.

The selling of implements like bandages, gloves, needles and wipes often draw the same titles as just mentioned. The pharmaceutical industry causes confusion here, primarily because the titles would only be applicable to those who are actually managing a sales team. Moreover, sales manager jobs can carry a range of acronym titles from RBM (regional sales manager) to ABM (area sales manager) to RM (Regional manager) and even BUM (Business Unit Manager).

The pharmaceuticals industry has various sales roles which carry their own unique heading. Such examples include healthcare liaisons, business development managers and NHS liaisons. The latter would be responsible for sales to all key NHS organisations, regardless of their size.

The sale of equipment from basic surgical tools all the way up to state of the art image scanners falls under the title of medical equipment sales. In turn this falls into a subcategory of healthcare sales jobs.

The penultimate area of medical sales jobs relates to jobs such as doctors, surgeons and nurses. ‘Healthcare jobs’as they are known refer to those titles and any other position that involves the provision of healthcare. As mentioned this term can be confused by different positions in other areas of medical jobs.

Another selection of job titles is generated by the sale of general items into the supply chain. Selling to wholesalers and national chemists, National Account managers have replaced the role of the retail sales representative. The area of Hospital selling attracts a variety of job titles ranging from hospital specialist and hospital representative, through to Key account managers.

To summarize there are a host of contradictions and abbreviations that have the ability to confuse any medicals sales job hunter. The golden rule here is to always read or ask for a detailed job description before applying to any position. The job title itself is likely to give minimal insight into what the position actually entails.
