Top SEO tips for recruitment agencies

For the forward thinking recruitment agencies there is the option of doing it themselves. SEO (search engine optimisation) work is, in itself, not complicated. It’s knowing what to do in the first place that can be difficult. If you are considering setting up an internal SEO operation here’s a few key things to aid your research.

 Understanding meta tags. Meta tags are simply labels applied to your website that google reads. So each page has an overall ‘title’ such as ‘recruitment agencies’ and ‘description’ such as ‘advertising options for recruitment agencies, along with ‘keywords’ and subheadings such as ‘H1’ and ‘H2’ As logic should dictate, these labels indicate what the page is about. Essentially you need to make sure your meta tags reflect the phrases you want to list for. Google will treat the tags on your home page as the most important, and then diminishing importance the further away from the home page you go. So ensure your most important phrases make up the tags on the home page, then get your other phrases to appear as tags on other pages of the site.

Building inbound links. A one way inbound link to your site is considered a ‘vote’ for your site. It’s the single most important factor in SEO. You’ll here SEO companies talking about ‘quality’ links. Quality is usually determined by how relevant the linking website is to your phrase. If you link from a website about a hotel to one about recruitment agencies, google will see this as contrived. In this case you need to link from a website, or at least a page with content about recruitment.

Directory submissions. These are possibly the lowest form of inbound link in terms of quality. However, there are 1000s of them and they are free. They allow you to submit your website with a brief description on your content and link back to your site. This means are getting a link back to your site from a page with at least your description which is on the right topic. You can enhance the result if you can post it in a page with other links on the right topic.

Social bookmarking. This is the internet equivalent of tagging pages in various books on your favourite bookshelf so you can refer to them anytime you want. However, through tagging your favourite web pages on an internet bookmarking site, you can look these up where ever you can get onto the internet. These sites do allow you to create a link back to your site, but they usually label it with what’s called the ‘nofollow’ attribute which removes it’s SEO value. However, what bookmarking does allow you to do is put up a new page, for example news. Ordinarily it may be weeks before google will read this. Once you bookmark the page, google will see the link within hours or less and read your new page on the end of the link, giving you instant benefit for your new content.

Article marketing. Probably one of the most powerful techniques. Create a whole page of content, for example ‘All about recruitment agencies’, then post it on an article site on the internet for free. This means you create a page with your key phrases, recruitment agencies in the title. The description will usually be taken from your first paragraph so ensure your key phrase is here, and then peppered throughout your article. Once posted, google see s a link from a whole page on your topic, and as a result assigns more weight.

Learning SEO techniques yourself is a long process but could save you a lot of money and get better results. In my opinion, recruitment agencies who adopt this now, will have an opportunity to be the leaders in the near future. Buying in SEO services will simply become more expensive the more competitive it gets.
