In this age of expensive and ever increasing prices for gasoline, it is more important than ever to keep your budget under control by spending less money on gas. However, it's not like you can simply quit your job; there are bills to pay, after all and they are always on the rise as well – so what's a girl to do? You can keep costs down and help out the environment at the same time by carpooling! You may find that this is even more fun than facing that long commute on your own; and it will certainly cut your gas expenses drastically.

The first step to starting a carpool is to find other people to get in on the carpool with you. You can inquire with co-workers first, to see if anyone else would be interested in carpooling who lives on your way to work (or vice versa). You could also ask around other businesses nearby your work – some of the employees there may also be interested in carpooling as an alternative to a solitary commute. You can also look at some of the many rideshare-oriented websites online to try to find others in search of a carpool, or a carpool in need of another rider. In a carpool, members typically take turns driving, so no one has to take on the task of driving each and every day, unless they choose to do so.

Online classified ads are also a possibility for finding carpool partners, there are too many of these to list here, but even your local papers most likely have websites which include ads for carpools. These are a good place to check. A carpool offers a lot of benefits to members; other than the reduced cost, there is the advantage of having company on your commute. Many cities also have carpool lanes which are express lanes, so choosing to carpool can even get you to work faster! Of course, the more passengers that are in a car, the less cars there are on the road in total – so carpooling helps to reduce traffic and improves everyone's commute, as well as reducing pollution.

There are really no downsides to carpooling, provided you choose your carpool partners wisely. You do of course want people to carpool with who are personally compatible with you; fellow carpoolers who are unpleasant and difficult to be around are probably not a good fit for your carpool. At its best, carpooling can be a way to reduce costs, save time and have a more pleasant commute with opportunities to socialize on the way to work and can even be a way to build long-lasting friendships between carpoolers. If you're interested in all of these benefits, maybe it's time you stated a carpool yourself.
