Health is of the utmost importance to each and every Canadian. The recent announcement of the forthcoming Radiation Bunker to Royal Victoria Hospital this fall will bring to our region important access to care here at home.
When it arrives, this bunker will provide cancer patients throughout Simcoe-Muskoka access to life-saving radiation right here in the City of Barrie. There is no doubt our community has united and worked together for some time to ensure the realization of a long anticipated regional cancer center at Royal Victoria Hospital.
The announcement of the mobile radiation facility to arrive at RVH in the fall is an example of what increases in healthcare transfers at the federal level can to do to assist the provinces in achieving better healthcare.
Having spent much time working with the Honorable Tony Clement, Minister of Health, Ms. Janice Skot, RVH CEO, Garth Matheson and Dr. Rob Ballagh to bring this effort to realization it is pleasing to see that our dedicated work has paid off. This illustrates another example of how partisan politics can be pushed aside to get things done for Barrie residents.
It is estimated that 153,100 new cases of cancer will occur in 2007. The most frequently diagnosed cancer will continue to be breast cancer for women and prostate cancer for men. By 2014, it is estimated that the RVH radiation program will be caring for 1600+ patients annually. These statistics demonstrate the important impact the mobile radiation facility will have on our community.
The ability of RVH to deliver Radiation Therapy to treat patients with cancer will have a fundamental impact on cancer patients in this region. Traveling for treatment puts a difficult burden on both patients and their families and can cause complications that could compromise a patient’s health. The availability of treatment close to home will ensure that cancer patients have ease of access to pain management, care management, including the management of side-effects. Further they will not have the cost of traveling to Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto for treatment and care.
Until construction of the Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre is completed and open, the early addition of the mobile radiation facility will allow the hospital to deal with over 60,000 patient visits in its first year of operation alone. Team work truly does make the dream work!
