The text is the major piece in the design for business card printing. So it is of course important to always decide carefully on how you implement your text design. In my experience with online business card printing, I have always found that there are several very useful design techniques that always work. So to help you out in your own business card printing, here are my seven design tips that should be quite useful for you.
1. Keep your fonts straightforward.
First things first. One big reminder for you is to keep your fonts straightforward. The worst thing you may do with the fonts of your business cards is to use a terrible and wacky font. Since a color business card is still a business print unto itself, you still need to place text in there in a respectable manner. So keep your fonts understandable and simple looking.
2. Mix and match fonts.
Now, one of the simplest things you can do in designing your business cards is to mix and match fonts. You don't have to use one font for all the text in your business cards. For example, you can use a bigger and “bolder” type font for the name text, and then you can use a lighter and softer font style for the text about your profession. If you mix your font styles right, you can get a nice subtle effect of variety and creativity while still being business formal.
3. Use different typefaces.
Of course, never forget that you can easily use typefaces in your business card. By simply using the bold type for the major text areas, and then using the italics for minor details, you can create a nice play of font designs that should be quite nice. You don't even have to install special fonts or add special effects for that.
4. Add special font effects.
If you are feeling a bit adventurous though, you can of course add special font effects. In design software such as Photoshop, you can use features like “glow effects”, Shadows, Strokes, Embossing and many other features that makes fonts come out quite distinctly. While of course care must be practiced in making the business card look too wild, some of these effects can be quite subtle but entirely effective. So try to experiment whenever possible.
5. Play with the spacing.
Remember as well that fonts usually can be altered in terms of their spacing and dimensions. Character dimensions and line spacing can be adjusted through certain controls in software like Photoshop. You can change actual character sizes (its width and its height) to better fit your text into the business card layout. Moreover, you can also save more space by adjusting line spacing to the barest minimum. By doing this you can save space for your layout, while being able to adjust your fonts for the best configuration.
6. Contrast your text with the background.
Also take note that it is important to always contrast the color of your text with the background of the color business card. So if your background is lighter, then dark colored text is the best and if your background is darker then lighter colored text it is the best. This should make your text content appear brighter and better.
7. Add subtle color gradients.
Finally, to make your fonts a little bit more detailed, you might want to add some subtle color gradients into your text. Using Photoshop blending options, it is easy to add a nice and subtle effect of changing colors within text, which can make a business card design quite good and compelling. So try to experiment and see if gradients can help you in design.
So there you have it. A few handy tips for text in your business cards. Hopefully this improves your business card printing.
