Catalog printing does not only deal with the product pictures of print catalogs, but also the text that accompanies them. The text in catalog printing must always be inviting, clear and easily readable. They must provide information to people in an efficient way, while at the same time contributing to the overall look of the color posters.
If you want to make your catalog fonts look better and cooler then, there are a few tricks that you might want to try out in your catalog design.
1. Adjust their normal heights.
Since catalogs can be quite crowded, you can try the trick of adjusting the normal heights of your color catalog fonts to fit the layout. In Photoshop, this is done by editing the character options of your desired texts. You can increase of decrease the standard heights easily by just entering a certain percentage value of actual height.
2. Adjust their normal lengths.
Also of course, if you can adjust the heights, you can also adjust the lengths of your catalog fonts. If you want fatter and wider fonts but still use the same style, you can adjust this setting to enter a value that is wider than normal. This should further help you customize the look of your font for the sake of the overall design.
3. Adjust their normal horizontal spacing.
Spacing can also be played with of course. I refer here to the spacing between characters. Most font styles have a standard set space between their characters, but editing software can override this and place them closer together. In fact if you want you can try overlapping them to create a nice crowded effect if you want.
4. Adjust their normal line spacing.
It is also possible to adjust the line spacing of your fonts as well as the character spacing. In most cases, there is a default space for each line to the next that is usually used. In imaging software you can also circumvent this and make texts that are one line space a part come closer together. This can be used for great effect in symbols and other important signage in a poster design.
5. Adding shadows.
If you want however to add some distinction to some of your text, you might want to add some shadows. Yes some image editing software can add shadows to your fonts, making them look like they have been lifted up in the design. This is also perfect for logos, titles and headings.
6. Adding “strokes”.
Like shadows, strokes or borders can also be used to add distinction to your text. These are basically extra color spaces that are added around the characters themselves. This can provide an extra thickness of the letters making them look bigger and more distinguished.
7. Adding fillers.
Finally, you can also play with the color of your catalog fonts for great effect. Adding gradient fillers for example in your text can really be interesting. One side of your text can have a totally different color from another. In between them there is a seamless transition of color from one side to the next. This makes your words more interesting and is perfect for making logos and advertisements.
Those are the 7 tricks that should improve your catalog fonts Try them out and see what looks best for your designs.
