The work of a business consultant is to help organizations improve their performance, primarily through the analysis of existing business problems and development of plans for improvement, including gaining external advice, access to the consultants’ specialized expertise, or simply as extra temporary help during a one-time project, where the hiring of more permanent employees is not required.

Business consultants are respected and relied upon in every industry, they are also admired for their both expertise and their independence. There are several areas where a you can choose to specialize including communications consulting, e-business consulting, operations consulting, marketing consulting, small business consulting, human resources consulting (HR consulting), organizational development consulting, strategic planning consulting, technology consulting (IT consulting) and any other areas organization need professional advice.

According to the survey of website www.payscale.com the salary of business consultants ranges from $40,000 to more than $300,000 depending on how much experience. It is no wonder they are among the most highly paid professionals today.

There is no special education necessary to become a business consultant. The truth is there are senior consultants that do not have a degree, the willingness and the desire to become one is the most important thing.

Here are some ideas to become a successful business consultant:

•    Take a survey of your skills, knowledge and strengths as a potential consultant. Identify specific areas of expertise along with areas where you feel less confident and not good at. Decide if you are willing to work with others as they cultivate a new business.

•    When you are done identifying your target clients, start to work on a marketing plan. List the names of companies who may be interested in your service and contact them. Have a Web site that display your services and prices listed, along with clear contact information for a free estimate.

•    Develop a strategy for your own advertising. Take a survey and compare costs of radio and print ads, direct mail, email lists, or free samples of your service at a trade show or exhibit.

•    Improve your professional manner, personality and communication style. Submit requested proposals or don not be late on appointments. Look neat, professional and attractive, because first impressions really do count.

•    Correct errors gracefully and with respect. Apologize for errors and misprints information, and do everything in your power to make it right with the client. Always remember that the average disgruntled customer shares an unpleasant experience with about 20 other people, who in turn may repeat the problem to more.

•    Look for your own mentors, experts, and guides to help you strengthen your skills and specialize in a given area. Attend trade shows, conferences, trainings and special events that is in your line of business. You always need to learn new ideas, and your consulting services will continue to improve as a result.

•    Give serious attention to the problem at hand and offer fair-minded and reasonable solutions. If the client is satisfied, they are most likely to reach you again and refer other clients.
