A typical audio conference call is simply a telephone call but with a difference. With a conference call multiple people can take part in the conversation or just listen in. This explain the conference bit. Depending on the service you have, it’s entirely optional who you would want to take part in the tele-conference and who listens in on the conversation. If you own a franchise and wanted to update all departments at the same time without being unnecessarily interrupted. This is an example of the benefits of such a control.

The main industry term for these services is ATC or Audio Tele-Conference. The biggest use of these services is with companies to stay in contact with multiple depots, on a national or international level and any third party contractors or clients etc. Conference call services make it simpler to operate multiple departments efficiently by providing great standards of communication. You're also able to stay in contact with any required colleagues without having to call everybody separately. Ultimately you will have more valuable time for the other matters at hand and you will also save money.

Next I am going to explain a little about the three main kinds of audio conference call services available. Lets begin with the Conference Bridge. Conference Bridges are simply a private telephone network installed on-site.

This enables all departments on the premises to keep in constant contact with one-another whenever they need to for free. You do get billed for outside calls though. And you also get the most profitable feature. The conference call service. Conference calls enable you to have international meetings from the comfort of your own office and minimises travel expenses. The only thing with a conference bridge is it will need supervision in the form of operators. Operators want paying and are needed full time. And adding to the costs is the equipment, the installation and any maintenance. So overall it helps to minimise business costs but at the same time you need to be pretty well established to afford the set-up in the first place. This explains why usually only large companies who have them installed.

It isn't needed as much with smaller companies but they can make a conference call through their land-line telephone if they need to. This comes at an extra cost compared to a normal land-line phone-call but it requires no maintenance or operation etc. Any services are included in the bill. So long as you have a decent telephone provider you should never experience any problems.

In modern times the internet is constantly evolving and more and more people rely on Messengers like Windows Live or Skype. With most instant messengers it's 100% free to communicate with any users of the same service. It appears that these days Skype is the favoured messenger. Operation is simple and it works great. You send live messages or phone people and you can also make video calls. You can buy calling credit just like a cellphone to make calls around the world. The rates are not particularly special though. I've got a Post Office land-line in England and the call rates to other nations are fairly similar to Skype. However, between two or more Skype users its 100% free and you can’t complain about that.

So a quick recap. Many larger companies have a conference bridge installed. Conference bridges help minimise costs if you look at the bigger picture but they don’t come cheap. Plus you can make a conference call from any land-line telephone. These cost a little more compared to regular telephone calls but there aren't any other costs involved. Then there is the modern age of internet instant messengers which cost nothing to make one to one or conferences between other users. If you use this option, just get everybody involved to install the same software.
