Training in Cisco is fundamentally for those who wish to understand and work with routers and network switches. Routers join up computer networks over the internet or lines dedicated for that purpose. We'd recommend that your first course should be your CCNA. It's not advisable to launch directly into a CCNP as it is very advanced - and you need to work up to it before you take this on.

As routers are connected to networks, look for a program that covers networking fundamentals (maybe the CompTIA Network+, possibly with A+ as well) and then do a CCNA course. It's vital that you've got some knowledge of how networks operate before you start a Cisco course or you'll probably struggle. When you've qualified and are on the job market, employers will be looking for networking skills alongside your CCNA.

Achieving CCNA is what you should be aiming for - don't be cajoled into attempting your CCNP yet. After gaining experience in the working environment, you'll know if you need to train up to this level. Should that be the case, you'll be much more capable to succeed at that stage - as your experience will help you greatly.

Accredited exam simulation and preparation software is a must - and must be supplied by your training supplier. Don't go for training programs relying on unofficial exam preparation systems. The way they're phrased can be completely unlike authorised versions - and this leads to huge confusion in the actual examination. It's a good idea to request some practice exams that will allow you to test your understanding at any point. Practice exams will help to boost your attitude - then you're much more at ease with the real thing.

It seems to make sense on one level, but consider these issues: Maybe the order of study pushed by the company's salespeople doesn't suit all of us. What if you find it hard to complete every element within the time limits imposed?

In all honesty, the perfect answer is to have their ideal 'order' of training laid out, but get everything up-front. You're then in possession of everything should you not complete it within their ideal time-table.

Many trainers only give support available from 9-6 (office hours) and sometimes later on specific days; most won't answer after 8-9pm at the latest and frequently never at the weekends. Try and find training with proper support available at any time of the day or night (even 1am on Sunday morning!) Make sure it's always access directly to professional tutors, and not simply some messaging service that means you're constantly waiting for a call-back - probably during office hours.
