The number of current computer viruses is increasing on average approximately 250 per day. We only hear about the few really bad ones. However, many are roaming about cyberspace hunting for victims.

The damage that these stealth hunters do can be very substantial. Their key feature being, they do the damage before they’re detected. Some are insignificant pain in the neck types.

Others can freeze and stymie major networks and banks of computers causing widespread damage. How we successfully protect ourselves rests entirely upon whether we approach our protection using a preventive approach or a cure approach.

The current computer viruses demand that we adopt a multi-faceted approach. We should incorporate a preventive/cure approach. The continual bombardment of viruses dictates that someday, some viruses are going to get through our defenses.

Scanning falls under the preventive heading of protection. Before you open email, right-click and scan it. That goes for email attachments also. When you download software, eBooks or whatever, always save to a file and then scan the file before opening.

Benjamin Franklins words of yesteryear still hold true today, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

With today’s stealth viruses you could lose all of your important files before you ever realize that they’re gone. Backing up your information is a crucial cure in case of a virus attack. Having receipts, activation and registration codes backed up will save you a whole lot of stress.

Back up your data files frequently. CD and DVD burners are a good way to backup your files. Always remain cognizant of the fact that you are under attack. Keep yourself up to date on the latest anti-virus software. Half the battle could be won there.
