I am stunned. In October, 2006, the population of the United States will reach three hundred million strong. It took 139 years to reach one hundred million, only fifty-two years to reach 200 million, and approximately thirty nine years to reach three hundred million people.

When considering all of the industrialized nations, the United States is the only one with significant population growth. According to the Census Bureau, our growth comes from births, immigrants and longevity of citizens.

The population is increasing in the Midwest region at the fastest pace. We must consider the drain we are putting on the environment. The resources we are consuming take years to replace. We are consuming energy, water, forests and more at a rapidly increasing pace. This is an area where we must seek conservation and more ways to decrease our dependence on fossil fuels.

Immigrants are making up a large portion of the increase. The United States is more ethically diverse today, According to David Pearce Snyder, lifestyles editor of Futurist magazine, by 2050, Americans of European descent will make up less than fifty percent of the population. Since Americans tend to live in areas based on race or socioeconomic status, we may find even more ethic communities in the future.

This increase in population is also a direct product of better medical care. We are becoming a nation of prevention while, at the same time, we are working on gene identification. In the future we will have the technology to improve people by changing gene structure. This will increase the time we have on this beautiful Earth.

To continue maintaining our standard of living, we must consider the effects of increased population growth in America. We must conserve our resources for future generations
