Widely hailed as Vincent Van Gogh’s masterpiece, The Starry Night is one of the most popular works of art of all time. The painting was completed a little over a year before Van Gogh’s tragic death at the age of 37. The artist’s mental problems are a legend. In the hopes of finding a cure for his mental illness, Van Gogh himself went into voluntary exile in the mental asylum of Saint-Remy. There, he painted furiously. The result of this were paintings of extraordinary beauty and possessing a different style to his other, pre-asylum works.

The Starry Night is no exception to the beautiful works produced during this time. The Starry Night reverberates with swathes of burning yellow while planets and other astronomical bodies twinkle in the distance. The hills heave and shudder, but the gold fireworks that undulate against the blue night sky provide a restful contrast.  Rooted in Van Gogh’s arguably wild emotion, as well as his rich, evocative memories, The Starry Night expresses the artist’s response to the world around him. The painting not only features what he saw in the confines of his asylum but also his memories of his native land in the Netherlands.

Van Gogh railed against what he saw as the grim-faced determination of other artists to portray the world as one perfect composition. He was more interested in showing feeling in various levels of intensity. This is why his paintings, like this one and The Olive Trees, veer away from stringent perfectionism to a more imaginative, even playful, depiction of his natural environment.

Because this is one of history’s most famous art works, it would only seem natural that this perpetually being reproduced, in various wall hanging, wall décor, wall fabric decoration and tapestries.
