Information
Canadian Immigration Statistics
In the same way that other countries keep track of immigration to their countries, Canada also keeps track of the status of immigrants inside the country. In Canada, the agency responsible for doing so is the Canadian Immigration and Citizenship or the CIC. For their part, the CIC diligently keeps track of the status of immigrants in the country, and they present their data in a quarterly publication that can be found on the web site of the agency. In its issue for March 2006, the CIC presents the most recent data and statistics on immigration in Canada.
In the most recent data, it shows that in the third quarter of 2005, the number of permanent residents in Canada increased by 12 percent to 75,951, as compared to the same period in 2004. In addition, the number of new permanent residents for the first three quarters of 2005, also increased by 10 percent to 206,859, as compared to the same period in 2004. On the other hand, there was a 12 percent decrease in the number of new family class immigrants in 2005, as compared to 2004. However, the number of economic class immigrants, or those who seek employment and business opportunities in Canada showed an increase of 29 percent and 18 percent respectively. For refugee immigrants, there was an increase of 26 percent in the third quarter of 2005, as compared to the same period in 2004.
Among the permanent residents, the ranking of the top five countries where immigrants come from did not change. Top on the list is China, followed by India, then the Philippines, followed by Pakistan and the United States. In addition to this, a majority of foreign workers came from the United States followed closely by Mexico and France -- then by Jamaica and Japan. Among the provinces in Canada, Ontario remained the province of choice for most immigrants, followed by Quebec and British Columbia.
Just like other countries, Canada keeps track of immigrants in the country through the agency that is in charge of implementing immigration policy, -- the CIC. For its part, the CIC presents immigration data that they have gathered to the public, not only for information purposes but to help guide how immigration policies are made to respond to future trends in immigration.
