Media Wrong on Karr

John Karr will not be charged with the murder of JonBenet Ramsey, as was reported endlessly by the cable news media.
The big question that came out of today was how could the prosecution get the case so wrong. Here’s a better one: How could the media once again be so wrong?
The mass media, which essentially convicted the Ramsey family in the court of public opinion by repeating the phrase “cloud of suspicion” that was used by overzealous and arrogant Boulder law enforcement officials in the 1990s, once again jumped the gun. A New York Post headline last week, for example, read “Snake on a Plane,” apparently trying to score points with movie goers.
There is no doubt that John Karr is a sick human being. Lying about a murder and saying that he had oral sex with a dead girl is truly revolting and Karr should frankly be in prison for coming up with such a publicity stunt. The real crime, however, was that the media once again took the bait. Karr, with his beady, sadistic-looking eyes, was the perfect suspect. A pedophile with a sick mind and uglier personality. It couldn’t be better for the media, which was able to devote endless time to the case because there was apparently nothing else going on in the world (yeah, right).
Now the media will devote more time to how the case fell apart and how the Boulder district attorney’s office once again fowled up the case. What the media should focus on instead is combing through the information, picking out the facts and only reporting on said facts when they are confirmed, instead of speculating endlessly. Let political pundits and media whores do all of the yakking. Journalists are supposed to report the facts.
