We often see photographs of missing people posted on bulletin boards, websites and postcards. The compilation of the list can be done by the police or websites, with the help of the relatives of the missing person. Legally, a person has to be missing for three days (or 72 hours) before labeled as missing. However, this is misleading. In circumstances where there has been some evidence of violence or the reason for absence is unusual, then a prompt investigation is called for.

The reasons for a person being reported as missing are many. They can be runaway cased; slavery; prostitution; drug addiction; or simply moving away without notice.

It is interesting to note that of the several thousand Americans who make it to the missing persons list, nearly four-fifths arechildren. If a missing person is not found for a period of seven years, and there is no adequate proof to suggest existence, then he or she is pronounced a "legally dead".

Over one million people are reported missing each year around the world, of which nearly 90 percent are eventually found.

Often, relatives give a photograph of the missing person to the concerned agencies who are liable to put out a missing persons' list, whether that is the police, newspaper or a website. They do it with the hope that someone will identify the individual and give valuable leads that will eventually lead to finding the missing person.

A person who has been missing for a considerable number of years is difficult to identify, particularly if the disappearance occurred in childhood. For example, a person's facial features at ten years of age are liable to be different to features at sixteen; at least different enough to create confusion. The benefit of modern technology manifests itself in the modern missing persons' lists. There are experts in the field who can come up with computer generated images of what a missing child would look like after five or six years. They are generally very accurate.
