The Internet is without doubt the greatest knowledge transfer tool since man started talking. The downside is that it is the voice, ears and eyes of a massive cross-section of people. – some of which you’d rather not associate with. For real people in the real world this can be at best an irritation and at worst an invitation to the global cesspit.
We all have freedom of choice, but some of us are freer than others. For compulsive people, the cesspit can be pretty enticing. It’s a bit like allowing an alcoholic to work in a brewery.
The Open Invitation
Pornography has always been around. The difference these days is that you don’t have to look far to find it. Forget subscribing to Penthouse and hoping that delivery will be in a brown paper envelope, or sneaking out to the Hustler shop while praying that your daughter doesn’t drive past.
All you have to do now is type in ‘sex’ in your browser search box and you’ll get it. The accessibility hasn’t destroyed its allure either. For most adults, porn sites are places for a once off thrill seeking mission and leaves you feeling unpleasantly smutty. For others it’s a fantasy world where there is no responsibility, no commitment and no demands.
So What’s the Problem? There are Quite a Few.
Porn stars aren’t real. They are airbrushed, mindless and intangible. While that might sound like a good thing to some, the problem sets in when the voyeurs starts expecting this from real people. Few women are blemish free babes with no inhibitions and morals. When porn surfers start expecting fantasy and reality to merge, lives and relationships are destroyed.
Porn addicts in the workplace are time thieves and creeps. Porn is addictive. Not to everyone, but there are millions of people out there who can’t get through the day without a daily perve. Porn is the fastest growing online industry.
Porn isn’t for kids. But access to porn sites is as easy as researching the Great Trek – if you know how. Would you recommend that your local library stock a stock of freely available porn? If your teenager has access to the Net, then you can bet your bottom dollar that he’s at least tried to get into a porn site. The majority of search engines can’t differentiate between ‘sex’ and smut.
What type of person gets addicted to Porn?
The same type of person that gets addicted to anything. If sex is the over-riding need, then porn offers instant gratification. Addicts may initially prefer to have a real sex life with a real woman, but after a while even a real woman no longer can compete in the mind of an addict.
If you’re a wiley parent or employer you will have already installed some kind of software to prevent access to porn sites. But if your business entails any kind of research, or if your child needs to find out about the sexual behavior of the ladybird, you are stymied.
