Since September 11, America Has Caught a Break

The five year anniversary of September 11 is nearly upon us.
The media will ask lots of questions.
Are we safer that we were before?
Are we closer to smashing our terrorist foes, or have they multiplied so much that they pose a disproportionately larger threat than ever before?
In one way, I believe America caught a break.
Bin Laden and his cohorts have been busy trying to out-do their stunning attack on the twin towers. That is where their primary focus has been.
It could have been going in a different direction, closer to what took place in Amman, Jordan over the weekend.
There, a lone sniper gunned down several Western tourists, killing at least one. This is not the first Al Quaida attack on vacationers. Jordan and Egypt have been hit before, by bombs.
What is distinctive is the fact that instead of trying to obliterate hundreds or thousands, this lone terrorist’s ambitions were more modest. He could only take down a handful of individuals.
This is precisely what makes his type of attack more threatening than the bigger blasts terrorists have been planning and trying to execute during the past 60 months. Smaller, more frequent attacks of this type, on Westerners and their economic interests, are nearly impossible to prevent.
Because they can be staged with merely a rifle or a handgun or even a blunt or sharp instrument in a crowd, they have substantial terror value, in themselves. If tourists and businesspeople believe they are unsafe to travel, the economy shrinks and is sent into shock.
The recovery being enjoyed by airlines will be short lived, and even more effort will be placed in making America, and perhaps other countries, garrisons.
The withdrawal of America and her interests from the Middle East, and elsewhere, is more likely to be accomplished through thousands of tiny “paper cuts” of this kind, than from the dramatic acts such as September 11.
