Through a legislation in the year 1935, the concept of social security was formalized which since then has evolved to the present day form as we see it today, albeit several amendments. Social security card is a crucial document to preserve which entitles you to several benefits.

Types of Social Security Cards

In the United States, it is the responsibility of Social Security Administration to deal with all issues related to social security, once the law is passed in the congress. The Social Security Administration issues 3 types of cards.

1. First type shows your name and the social security number and lets you work anywhere in the US without restriction. This type of cards are issued to US citizens and those who permanent residents or permanent permission to work from the Department of Homeland Security, DHS. This card entitles you to several federal benefits.

2. Next is the “Not Valid for Employment” card. Those who can’t have permission from DHS to work will get this card as they would still be required, in some cases, to possess the social security cards. These are the people who are lawfully admitted into the country but DHS permit to work. Some of them are entitled to a few federal funded benefits. Tourists and business travelers come under this type.

3. The third type inscribes, "Valid for Work Only with DHS Authorization". These are similar to the cards with "Valid for Work Only with INS Authorization" inscription on them prior to 2004. International students are subjects for this type of cards.
