The Number of Homeless Children Keeps Growing

The US government is constantly trying to make other countries better, help these people, help those people, etc. You know what I mean. What sickens me is that in our own country, the USA, there are millions of homeless children. I am not counting the adults, I am only counting the CHILDREN. The homeless that are under the age of 18. These kids have no families. They have no love or support in their lives. They have no place to go in the weather, for safety, for food, health, nothing.

Some are there because their parents are there, but most are there because they have no parents. They left their homelife because the streets looked better than the situation they were in. These kids have grown up being beaten, abused, both sexually and mentally, their parents are junkies or drunks, and they think their only chance of living a better life is to live on the streets. From there, a bad situation just turns progressively worse. They turn to crime, drugs and sex, just to survive. So many girls become pregnant before the age of 15, only to have miscarriages due to poor health, or being beaten. They cannot get medical care. These kids don't know where to go to find clean water, or hot food, let alone safe shelter.

The government also passed a law that makes it illegal for a person to help the homeless. Can you believe that? A person, just like you and me, would get a citation if we were to give a homeless child food. They passed laws that keep kids deeper and deeper into the streets, by kicking them out of the safer neighborhoods, where maybe they can find a half-eaten sandwich, or warmth in a building doorway. Yet, when these kids were in the 'system', they were being starved, raped, beaten, and more. What are they supposed to do? What CAN they do?

They are children. They are too young to work, they are too young to rent an apartment. They have to fight to survive. Homeless children are just waiting to die, to go to a better place. They don't realize that there is help for them. All of their energy is being spent of finding food and shelter.

A lot of the homeless kids are with a family, pushed out into the streets because one parent has died, and the other simply couldn't afford to pay the bills. They can't go to school, because they are being taken from one location to another. From one shelter to another. If they are lucky, their parents aren't junkies or drunks.

I am a mom of two kids. It breaks my heart to think how many kids I have passed that were homeless. It scares me to think it could very well be my own kids. I thank God every day that I am able to provide for my children. There is a growing number of agencies that are trying to help these kids, but there just isn't enough. Isn't it time we all took a stand? Maybe we can bring this to an end, if we all band together as one. There is strength in numbers, right?

Think about this, think long and hard. This could very well be you and your children one day. Count your blessings and tell your children how much you love them, reach out a hand to their friends, you just never know.
