Non-profit organizations use fundraising to solicit money and support for their daily activities. Professional sports organizations use fundraising events to raise money and to spread awareness about various issues.

Athletes can be particularly effective in using their talent and celebrity status to raise funds. Their status as role models attracts sports lovers and young people who look up to them.

A common fundraising method in professional sports is putting together an all-star team by filling each team with popular players who attract paying patrons. These audiences are willing to pay to watch their favorite players battle it out on the court or on the field, and the fact that it is a good cause is an added incentive to devote their time and energy to it.

Another method that originated from the sports industry is wristband fundraising. In fact, this trend was started by Tour de France winner and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong with his LiveStrong wristbands.

Similar rubber wristbands stamped with inspirational messages can be sold at sporting events or other venues to raise funds. This type of wristband was also made popular by other professional athletes. Players have worn rubber wristbands with the name of their team etched into them, along with their jersey numbers.

Today, rubber wristbands are sold to raise funds and awareness for causes like cancer research, AIDS, health centers, and shelters. Like the ribbons worn on lapels that represent causes, rubber wristbands that benefit charitable organizations allow you to wear your cause and let others know what you support.
