If you frequently suffer from sleepless nights then you maybe wondering if there is a drug-free sleep program. More than 40% of insomniacs medicate themselves to sleep with prescription or over-the-counter sleeping pills. Surveys suggest that most sufferers do not know how to tackle insomnia effectively without medication. However they also suggest that more than 83% of sufferers who medicate themselves to sleep would prefer an effective drug-free method.

Insomnia is becoming a national epidemic affecting a third of all adults. With such a high rate of insomniacs relying on medication to sleep, the only people benefiting is the big pharmaceutical industry.

In fact, the pharmaceutical industry is one of the most profitable in the world, breaking $550 billion in sales in 2004 alone. A high percentage of their profits go back into their advertising campaigns. As most of their profits come from prescription drugs, their campaigns have taken a strategic shift to maximize profits. One way they have done this is by targeting doctors.

We live in a fast paced world obsessed with quick-fix solutions, quick slimming aids, fast abs, convenience stores, microwaves and TV dinners. These corporations take advantage of this susceptibility by advertising the dream of a perfect life. In fact a lot of prescription drugs on the market are becoming household names.

We buy into the idea that they are providing a solution. Of course we do, their adverts are professional and full of smiley, healthy people, who wouldn’t want that? This triggers the classic and intended result of taking a trip to see the doctor and asking them about X drug, another satisfied customer in the bag.

With only 10% of doctors rating their sleep knowledge as good, there does seem to be a shortage of alternative solutions for insomnia. Shockingly there are an estimated 100,000 deaths in the America each year alone from adverse drug reactions. Unfortunately we never get shown or told the uglier side in these over glossed advertisements. Instead we are subjected to false hopes of a perfect and healthy life through the use of 'X' drug.

We buy into the dream is because we are continuously being subjected to their advertising campaigns. We have built this need for quick-fix solutions and essentially we have been blinded from the truth.

With more money than they know what to do with, these big pharmaceutical corporations easily dominate the market. So much so, that there only seems to be one answer. We are stripped away of choice and information, and bombarded with one false truth, when in reality there are other options out there. Essentially it’s our duty to educate ourselves and find a better solution.

It seems that majority of sufferers do not realize that there are alternatives to sleeping pills. But there are numerous non-pharmaceutical methods of dealing with insomnia. Practices and therapies such as reflexology, hypnosis, acupuncture and brain entrainment are effective alternatives to treating insomnia.

If you are suffering from insomnia consider looking into drug-free sleep program. Pay attention to your sleep hygiene and educate yourself about sleep.
