Throughout time, in history books and in the Bible, crowns were made with gold, diamonds and gemstones that were worn by royalty. Craftsmen made the crowns with precious gemstones such as Diamonds, Rubies, Sapphires and Emeralds and semi-precious gemstones like Peridot, Aquamarine, Citrine and many more. Of course tools that were used back then have greatly improved making gemologists’ jobs somewhat easier and have enhanced new techniques in designing gemstone jewellery. People all around the world are in search of just the right piece of jewellery whether it is a diamond ring, diamond bracelet, diamond earrings or a diamond pendant. They are looking for quality and, of course, the right price.

Not all diamonds mined are of good enough quality to use as gems in diamond rings, diamond bracelets, or diamond pendants and diamond earrings.  Those diamonds that are not made into jewellery get used in industrial tools such as diamond headed drills.  Gemologists take the better diamonds cut and polish them to achieve the greatest brilliance.  They are made multifaceted by grinding and polishing them.   They are then put into categories which are known as the “4 C’s”.  These are Clarity, Color, Cut & Carat.

Clarity describes the clearness or purity of a diamond. This is determined by the number, size, nature, and location of the internal imperfections (inclusions) and external imperfections (blemishes).

Color describes the amount of color the diamond contains. This can range from colorless to yellow with slight tints of yellow, gray or brown. Colors can also range from intense yellow to brown, blue, green, pink and red. These fancy colors are rare and therefore more valuable.

Cut refers to the proportions, finish, symmetry, and polish of the diamond that allows the light to shine through it.  If you have ever heard the term “round cut brilliant diamond”, it is these factors that determine the fire and brilliance of a diamond.   A well cut & flawless diamond will sell at an extreme premium. A facet is the tiny polished face on the outside surface of the stone. There are 58 facets on a Round Cut Brilliant diamond.

Carat is the unit of weight for the diamond. One carat is equal to 0.20 grams.  The value per carat increases with carat size, because larger rough diamonds occur less frequently.  In other words, 2 half-carat diamonds taken together will not cost as much as 1 one-carat diamond, as the one-carat stone is rarer.

These are the diamond rings, diamond bracelets, diamond earrings, or diamond pendants that we are accustomed to seeing in jewellery stores.  Once they have gone through all these processes the mark-up that you see in the stores is about 70-90%. They have to charge the consumer that much because of high overhead they have, overhead such as power, rent and staff.   Because we at allthatglittersis.com have eliminated all of the overhead we can offer you quality jewellery at quality prices.
