Choosing Bracelets for Kids -- a Guide for Moms and Grandmothers

Gift-giving season is just around the corner -- it's less than a year away!  Do you have some young girls in your life who might like a bracelet as a gift?  Well, I've written this short article to give you a few recommendations for purchasing an appropriate bracelet for the young gals in your life --

If you will be purchasing a bracelet for a younger girl, there are a few things to take into consideration.  First of all, young girls -- like any young child -- can be very hard on clothing and jewelry items.  They are still learning how to take proper care of them!  So don't buy anything too expensive.  In general I would recommend that you purchase a plastic bracelet for a younger girl.  They don't need to look cheap, but they should be the type of plastic bracelet that has an elastic band, rather than a clasp.  And any bracelet that you buy for a younger girl should be made of non-toxic materials (just in case!).  I would also recommend that you buy an inexpensive, plastic, jewelry box so they will have a place to store their bracelet -- it's never too early for them to begin to learn how to care for jewelry, and proper care includes proper storage.

If you will be purchasing a bracelet for an older girl -- teenage girls for example -- then you will, of course, have more options.  I would recommend the purchase of a silver novelty bracelet -- young girls like bracelets with a "chunky" design.  Another perennial favorite is the traditional charm bracelet -- teenage girls sometimes love wearing these, because they can personalize their bracelet with their own unique set of charms (and being different is what being a teenage girl is all about!).

For the older child especially, I would also recommend that you coordinate your bracelet purchase with the purchase of a pin, necklace, or earrings set -- let them get a feel for what it is like to wear jewelry accessories that are coordinated.  I would also strongly urge that you purchase a better-quality jewelry box for them as well -- this jewelry box should not be a cheap plastic thing, but a wooden, felt-lined jewelry box that they can use for many years, as they grow into adulthood.  Many young women look upon the acquisition of that jewelry box as a major milestone in their life -- some of them take it right on into their lives as a married, adult woman.
