Most ATM transactions have charges associated with them. Basically, there are two types of ATM fees. The first is a surcharge fee, which is charged by the ATM owner. Surcharge fees can cost as much as $3.00 per transaction. The other type of fee is collected by members of a financial institution.

Some banks impose yet another type of ATM fee. This is called a transaction fee. This can be looked at as a penalty fee for bank clients who do not use their ATMs.

Though these fees might seem minimal, they do add up over time. However, there are ways that you as an ATM cardholder can avoid or cut down ATM fees. First, you may want to look for banks that do not charge fees for using the ATMs of other banks. This alone can save you as much as 50% of the monthly surcharge fees that may be charged on average.

It is also advisable to look for banks that offer reimbursements for surcharge fees collected. This is especially true for clients who often use ATMs in remote areas, which are often operated by separate owners.

You can also reduce the need to make ATM transactions by opting for a credit card that acts as an extension of your checking account. This card can be used when making purchases at most shops. This way, the need for cash can be eliminated because the costs of the goods can be deducted from the checking account.

Properly anticipating your cash needs can also help save money that would otherwise be used paying ATM surcharges. By thinking carefully of the amount of money needed over a certain period of time, frequent ATM withdrawals can be avoided. Thus, you can be spared a significant amount of surcharge fees by making larger withdrawals less frequently.
