Becoming disabled can possibly be one of the greatest financial risks that you and your family might have to encounter through your life. Disability plans are disability insurance policies with different characteristics or agreement terms. Those plans provide you with sufficient financial support if a personal illness or an injury prevents you from attending your job and thus, earning your regular income.

One of the most common disability insurance plans available is a short-term disability coverage plan. This plan will cover you only for a short period of time; that is, after a period of about three to nine months has passed, the plan will no longer support you. Short-term disability insurance plans are very helpful in situations where the insured person is temporarily unable to work. The plan will cover him with a percentage of his salary and so, he will be able to make it through the situation without any risk or without spending all the money that he has gathered so far.

Contrary to short-term insurance plans, long-term insurance policies are meant to cover you for long periods of time. Those plans will usually supply you with a percentage of your salary until your normal retirement age comes or until you are able to work again.

Another common choice is group insurance plans. Those plans are meant to cover many people together and usually the benefits are mostly economic. For example, those plans will require minimal proof of good health and taxability benefits. Moreover, depending on the specific details of the plan, your disability benefits may continue while you attempt to return to work. A typical example is trying to return to work and initially starting off with the minimal work charge that you can do. You may even receive a higher total income than if you received only the long-term disability coverage.
