Can You Beat Type 2 Diabetes
My Story – Can Diabetes be Controlled
After a game of golf one day, I contracted cramps that almost overtook me, such severe cramps that consumed me for some 15 minutes before I was able to get relief. After getting them out of my legs, my arms would contract, shoulders, back, neck, indeed my whole body seem to have an attack. Sure I was tired, but I have never experienced such a painful experience before or since. I had been starting to get minor cramping while playing golf, and the attacks were starting to strike earlier in the round but I had no idea what was causing this to happen.
A couple of days later, I visited my doctor, and told him my story. He immediately stated that he thought I might have a “sugar problem”, but we would have to do a multitude of blood tests. I considered myself to be in excellent health, my cholesterol level was low, 48 years of age, never smoked, social drinker, a little overweight, played tennis during summer, casual golfer, grown up family, long marriage, financially OK, lots of friends, how could I possibly have “a sugar problem”. See how – www.health4diabetes.com
The doctor asked me if anyone in my family had diabetes, and here is a key, my mother had experienced some problems with diabetes before she died at a young age of 52 years of age.
By now he was convinced, blood tests followed and two days later I was back in his office. He told me that I had Type 2 diabetes, and ran through the test results with me. He told me not to worry, many people had the disease, there is plenty of good research and treatment available, and wrote me a prescription for metformin and lipitor, the former to control glucose and insulin, the latter to control my cholesterol levels.
Home I went, and I remember how difficult it was to tell my wife the news, I felt like a condemned man.
However, my journey had begun.
I drifted through the next 3 years, not taking anything too seriously. I was still healthy enough, just got tired quickly, and mild symptoms of the disease.
I was at a party one day, and a guy I saw irregularly came up and asked why I was drinking beer. I told him my symptoms were mild, and I was sick of eating cardboard and grass!! I let him know my thoughts on my lifestyle, and how I would rather die a few years earlier than live miserably. He told me his father had recently died of the disease, and how his mother had cared for his father for 22 years. In short, he scared the daylights out of me with a description of his father’s final months. I have two daughters, both married, one expecting her first child. How could I put my wife and family through that, and was I being selfish. So I decided to do something about it.
The first thing I did was learn as much as I could about Type 2 Diabetes. I read every article I could find and there is plenty published. Go to www.diabetes4health.com to see over a 100 pages of information.
Secondly, I went onto a strict diet, and lost over 7kg in 3 months.
Thirdly, I started a regimented exercise program, 5 long hard walks of 50 minutes each, and played golf twice a week, and tennis once a week.
Guess what – After my last visit to the doctor to discus the latest blood test, I am no longer diabetic. I know the disease can’t be cured, but I can learn to control it better. I’m looking forward to life more positively, and of becoming a grandfather for the first time.
