There are many facts about children and the conditions known as ADD and ADHD. Some of these facts make for unhappy reading. One such fact is that by giving the child prescribed medication, that alone will fix the problem and it’s all as simple as popping a pill. This is doubly sad and not just because it’s wrong. It’s also sad because there is no need to give many children any prescribed medication and the future of the child, their future happiness in terms of academic success and social skills, can depend largely on their treatment for their condition.

Now as regards actually having the condition there are certain facts which should be stated. Just because your child is hyperactive does not mean they have the condition. Many if not most kids are full of energy and enjoy playing at a breakneck speed. And to be sure of any diagnosis, many experts recommend only certain medical professionals will be able to accurately pinpoint any symptoms. The two professionals most highly recommended are a neurosurgeon or a psychiatrist. It is up to each parent to make the choice but these professionals are believed by many to best be able to diagnose your child.

So assuming your child has been diagnosed with the disorder, you are naturally keen to know the best way to treat the youngster. Medications are widely used but there is the belief that they may not be the best option. First you can consider diet. This can mean removal of some foods and the provision of others.

It may well be the case that food additives, colorings, artificial flavors and the like are contributing to your child’s disorder. Quite simply remove foods from your child’s diet which contain these substances. This costs nothing and there are no side effects or masking of your child’s behavior. Second. A super active child will burn off Vitamins C and E much faster than other children so giving an input of the right foods will correct this imbalance. Fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains and grilled meats will form a solid diet to help your child.

But then there are other drug-free medications will can and do assist. Is your child living on or close to a busy road with fumes from car and truck exhausts in the air? Is your child living in an industrial area where fumes from factories are in the air? It is possible that the environment is playing a significant role in the disorder your child suffers from. A cleaner, greener setting may play a significant role in their wellbeing.

Then too any stress from an unhappy home will not be helping. If your child is witness to fights and distress within the family, their chances of living a normal and full life are reduced.

Of course the prescribed medications are available but so too are a number of activities which can significantly change the lifestyle of your child. Explore all drug-free treatments and give your child the best possible chance of overcoming their ADD/ADHD situation.
