What is Viagra and how does it work?

Most people have heard of Viagra and relate it to a pill that helps guys have sex. Of course that is the elementary basic version of what Viagra is, summed up fairly quickly. But what is Viagra really? In order to fully understand what Viagra is you have to understand the anatomy of the penis first.

Viagra has an active ingredient called Sildenafil citrate, manufactured by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals it is the leading drug to treat erectile dysfunction otherwise known as impotency. Viagra was sort of stumbled on; it started off being a drug created for treatment of angina when the effects that the medication offered to the penis were noticed. Not long after it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration as the only drug approved to treat erectile dysfunction in the United States.

One thing that Viagra will not do is prolong ejaculation. Viagra increases blood flow to the penis then once the male gets sexually stimulated it will become erect. Just taking Viagra will not result in an erection, there has to be sexual stimulation involved first. The success rate with Viagra is at about 80% (Micromedex® Healthcare Series. Thomson Micromedex, 2006).

When a man can not get or maintain an erection long enough to have sex then he has erectile dysfunction. The reason for this is that not enough blood is flowing to the penis. Some men just can't get an erection at all and no matter how hard they or their partner try the penis will not change from a limp state. Other men can get hard but never hard enough for penetration, while others will get rock hard but will lose the erection before or during sex. This is a medical condition that can be caused by certain types of medication or conditions but in most cases the erections will not improve with out some type of medical treatment.

If a man suffers from erectile dysfunction either the nerves or the blood vessels in the penis are not working right. The result is that the blood that flows into the penis can no longer flow which means there is not immediate hope for an erection. Viagra opens up these vessels and allows a healthy flow of blood to move through the penis allowing a man to get an erection that is stiff enough for penetration and one that will last to fulfill adequate sexual pleasure for both partners.
