Hypothyroidism is a disease caused by insufficient production of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland. This disease may cause thyroiditis. Thyroiditis is one of the chief causes of sub-clinical hypothyroidism. Sub-clinical hypothyroidism is a term that has been challenged by the medical community because there are some patients who display clinical symptoms, but thus far no one has been able to propose a better name. Aside from thyroiditis, head and neck surgery, radiation therapy to the head, neck or chest area, iodine deficiency, amiodarone (cordarone), and secondary hypothyroidism (hypopituarism) are other chief causes of sub-clinical hypothyroidism.
The best way to screen for thyroid disease is to measure the serum thyroid-serum hormone. If the number is higher than average, then the patient is diagnosed with hypothyroidism. A lower number indicates hyperthyroidism. This test is very sensitive. The sensitivity tends to become a problem, though, since the test sometimes a registers a high level count when the patient has a normal thyroid hormone count.
A treatment that can be applied is levothyroxine or medications that have lithium or iodine. It is also advisable to simply regulate the nutrition in your diet. There are foods such as broccoli, cabbages, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, spinach, turnips, soybeans, peanuts, linseed, pine nuts, millet, cassava and mustard greens that suppress the functions of the thyroid glands, so they should be avoided. Refined foods, dairy products, wheat, caffeine, alcohol, soy products and isoflavone-rich food should be avoided.
Essential fatty acids that are vital to the production of thyroid hormones. Take supplements such as iodine, tyrosine, basic multi-vitamins C, E and B, beta carotene for vitamin A, calcium and L-tyrosine. Consume iodine-rich seafood, shellfish, and organic vegetables.
