In 1984 the non-profit National Arthritis Foundation opened with the purpose of advocating for arthritis patients and arthritis research. With branches all over the world, the organization is really making a difference. The foundation works to educate the public about arthritis and its causes as well as to garner support for their research programs. In addition, it works with pharmaceutical companies and researchers in trying to come up with a cure for arthritis.

Patient Care is a Crucial Issue

The task the National Arthritis Foundation has taken on is threefold: to make sure arthritis patients are getting the best care available, to educate patients and the general public about arthritis, and to generate funds for continued arthritis research. Membership in the foundation is at about 1000 people who include people with arthritis, health professionals, caregivers, and others who have an interest in stopping arthritis. The foundation is run by a council of elected officials as well as an executive committee.

As a nationwide, non-profit health organization, the goal of the National Arthritis Foundation is to promote all that is necessary in order to prevent new cases of arthritis, control existing cases, and work towards a cure of the country’s top crippler, arthritis.

There are approximately half a million people who volunteer to work with the National Arthritis Foundation. With 150 branch offices around the country, it takes a lot of dedicated workers to help arthritis patients fight their disease and win back some of their quality of life. Many books and in-depth booklets are available which give patients and caregivers tips on how to relieve pain and cope with arthritis symptoms.

The Arthritis Foundation has provided extensive funding for arthritis research over the years. Since 1948 it has donated over $3 million to arthritis research.  It also continuously funds more than two thousand health professionals and scientists in their quest to find 21st century solutions to the age-old problem of arthritis.

About three quarters of a billion people in America suffer from arthritis. The National Arthritis Foundation is their leading advocate in getting legislation introduced and passed which will help this huge percentage of the population who suffer from the pain and disability of arthritis.

More Americans become disabled because of arthritis than by any other cause. As long as this is the case, the National Arthritis Foundation will stand behind them with its mission of preventing and curing the various forms of arthritis. The foundation publishes a magazine six times a year called “Arthritis Today”. In its magazine the mission of the organization is made perfectly clear. Americans should spare no effort or expense in order to eradicate this terribly debilitating disease from our society.
