Do's & Don'ts of Doll Collecting
Taking care of a doll collection is not all that different from caring for most collectibles. There are a series of things that one should and should not do when it comes to preserving and enjoying a doll collection. Some of these things may seem like common sense but the truth is that people destroy and devalue their dolls all the time by forgetting about some simple and commonly made errors. Anyone with a serious interest and passion for doll collecting would be wise to ensure they are stocked with the proper information before getting started.
Leaving dolls out on display is great. In fact, it’s absolutely recommended. Dolls really don’t need to be kept in the box where nobody can enjoy them. However, they do need to be kept in a place that is safe for them. Try to avoid placing your dolls in any kind of direct sunlight. This will seriously fade the colours and details over time. Though sun damage happens slowly, it does happen and the effects are permanent. It’s best to arrange them on a shelf or in a display case that is kept in a room that gets the least amount of direct sun throughout the day.
Many people make the huge mistake of storing their dolls somewhere like an attic or in a basement. This is never a good idea. These types of places have a tendency to get damp and musty. This can result in the growth of mould or mildew which is awful and not at all good for a doll. Mould is hard to clean and if it is in the material, it is no good. Keep dolls stored in a cool, dry area where there is little risk of moisture getting in at the doll.
Buying a doll should always be done with careful consideration if it is for collector purposes. Dolls that are supposed to come with verification or proof of authenticity should never be purchased without it. It’s up to collectors to know what it is that they are getting. Do your research first in order to avoid scams or other forms of rip offs.
Dolls that have glass eyes should be cared for in order to maintain the quality of the doll. It’s recommended that these dolls are not to be stored lying down. To do so can risk ruining the glass eyes. Since this is usually the selling feature of these dolls, the last thing you want is to abuse them. Learn all that you can about your dolls in order to maintain their growing value and keep them in great condition.
Don’t make the mistake of forgetting to clean your dolls on a regular basis. Even a light dusting can make a world of difference. Neglecting the cleanliness of your doll collection can lead to stains, dust settling into the material and premature aging. Make an effort to take care of your doll collection. By caring for your dolls you will be making a large different in their longevity and quality.
