Like with any kind of collectible, there are many fictional myths and rumours that may mislead an unknowing collector. Myths are constantly changing and becoming more distorted. Whether you are a new doll collector or you have been collecting dolls for several years, it’s important to keep your eyes and ears open. It certainly doesn’t hurt to do a little investigating once in awhile, especially if you have reason to believe you have been misled.

There are plenty of common falsehoods regarding certain versions or year designs of particular dolls. One of these commonly told and inaccurate myths centers on a certain type of Barbie doll. For many years now there has been stories that a Barbie with the year 1966 printed on the back was incredibly valuable. This led many people to be sorely disappointed upon discovering that this is not true at all. The year is for the patent date of the Barbie, not the manufacturing date. A Barbie is not valued by the year printed on the back at all.

Another incredibly common misconception is the belief that dolls must be locked away in glass or plastic cases. The purpose of a doll is to bring joy to the person who cares for it. Dolls should be played with. Leaving them locked up actually does nothing to guarantee the value or increase it. A doll should be loved so play with it and carry it around if you like, just take good care of it as you do so.

For some reason eBay has gotten a bad rap from collectors who believe that there is nothing of any good to be found on the well known auction site. Collectibles sold on eBay tend to be frowned upon as if they are junk when in actuality, that is not true at all. Of course there are many things there of little value but that is why it’s up to the collector to find the item that is worth something. It’s surprising how often people sell things online without being aware of their true value. Searching auction sites can help you score some great deals.

Quite often doll collectors associate the value of a doll with the age of it. These two things do not always go hand in hand. A very old doll is not automatically worth a fair chunk of money. In fact, all too often it ends up being worth very little. Always do your research before assuming to know the monetary value of an old collectible. There are so many factors that play a role in determining the value.

Men are commonly presumed to never collect dolls or even enjoy them. This is usually very far from the truth. Most men start off by playing with dolls as small children. Though it is a woman dominated collectible, there definitely are men that partake in it. Collecting dolls is fun and often rewarding. However, separating the facts from the falsehoods is also part of staying on top of the game.
