Many people would not be too quick to label themselves as writers even though it’s one of their most cherished hobbies. The joy of writing often comes from the freedom associated with expressing oneself through the written word. Most people who love writing take great joy in jotting poetry or keeping a journal. Personal writing is still a hobby. It doesn’t have to be anything that you show to others. As long as you enjoy it and it serves its purpose as an activity that soothes and encourages you, that’s all that matters.

Anyone interested in writing as a hobby should make a point of doing it on a regular basis. Keep a journal or an online blog to practice your skill while distributing helpful information to others. Many people seek out blogs online that are based on specific topics. If there is anything that you have a level of expertise in, consider sharing it online with readers. Blogging is a great way to connect with others and it frequently offers money making opportunities via ads placed on blog sites. Of course the most important part is that it gives you a public platform to further your writing.

If you know that you love to write but you are not sure where to begin, try searching for some of the many writing related websites online. There are sites of all kinds, some of which allow you to post your own work online for the critique and review of others. If fiction or short story writing is of interest to you, look for sites that allow members to share story writing responsibility. Members each get to add their own lines or pages to a currently existing story. It’s a fun way of participating with others in something that you love.

If you seek some discussion with fellow writers, try any number of message boards and forums. There are many that writers of all kinds attend. It’s a great way to get professional advice from those who have been published or work as professional writers. Most message boards offer a place to post your work for the enjoyment of others or for receiving helpful criticism that will serve to better your work in the future. Of course it’s important to know all of your rights in terms of copyright laws before posting any work online. Copyright is automatic for writers. As soon as the work is written it belongs to the author, no official documentation needed. However, theft is still possible when posting on the internet.

Writing as a hobby still involves the basic rules of writing. It’s important to make editing and proofreading part of your regular writing routine. Hobbies should be based on enjoyment but certain skills must be maintained by following the proper rules as in those associated with writing. Use a word processing program that you find to be reliable to cut down on errors that tend to go overlooked. Writing as a hobby is a sure way to exercise the mind and stretch the imagination.
