Kindergarten First Day Tips

The first day of Kindergarten is a huge deal for both parents and kids. It’s a fun, exciting time in a child’s life that truly portrays how much they have grown up already. Getting ready for that big first day is important. Both you and your child should know what to expect. There are a number of things that you should take care to cover with your spouse and your child to ensure the best learning experience possible.

Be sure that your child is ready to start Kindergarten. Everyone learns at a different pace and some children require additional learning assistance. It’s essential that you determine these things before sending your child off to school. If your child requires added learning help and does not receive it, it could lead to further problems in the future. If you don’t feel that your child is quite ready to start school, there is no harm in waiting a year more if that’s what you feel is best.

Make sure to take your child to the school prior to the first day of Kindergarten. If you help them to become familiar with the surroundings ahead of time, leaving them on that big day will be much easier. Point out things like the location of the bathroom and water fountain. You’d be surprised at how much of a difference this will make in their confidence level of the first day.

Meet the teachers before the first day of Kindergarten comes. There is plenty that you need to know about the people that will be responsible for the education of your children. Ask any and all questions that may come to mind. Create a list if you need to. When you feel good about the people caring for your kids, you can let them go into the educational world with ease.

In many cases your child may insist that you stay with them until they are ready for you to leave. Don’t fight this if it is just the first day. Stay until they are comfortable. In most cases that takes just a few minutes. Once they get playing with toys and other kids they won’t even notice that you’re missing. It’s better to stay for a while than try to leave a crying child. This could just traumatize them further and cause it to be a daily event.

Try not to make the mistake of getting more emotional than your child does. The first day of Kindergarten is very special, especially when it is your first or only child. But kids get uneasy when they see mom or dad cry so keep your emotions in check. If you must shed a tear, save it for the car after they have gotten settled down. It will be better for everyone involved, including the teachers.

The first day of school is a lot of fun and a little bit of stress but take the necessary steps to prepare yourself and your child and it will go off without a hitch.
