Lanyards do not have to be used "as is". You can feel free to customize and adjust them anyway you see fit. You can use longer lanyards or smaller ones depending on how you like to "operate" in the field. For instance, you can use a small loop if you like to carry items using your pinky instead of your wrist for instance.

Some people may find different configurations more secure and useful than others. It's important to just feel your way through it to find the right setting for you with regards to your lanyard. It also depends on the item you are using the lanyard for whether it be a PDA or a camping knife.

You can adjust the lanyard freely to prevent "bouncing" about too much or dangle from your person. Feel free to tie any sort of knots you'd like as well and again this is a relatively open-ended issue. As long as it works for you and your needs, feel free to be creative with this process.

Hopefully this article has opened your eyes and eased your doubts on how to work with lanyards. You can use lanyards around your neck, your wrist, your fingers, your waist, or your legs, etc. It depends on personal preferences, the item in question, and the particular activity you are engaging in.
