Lanyards: Just What Exactly Are Lanyards?

I've been asked many times what lanyards are. More specifically, what is the purpose of a lanyard? The response generally, they can be used for almost anything!
Lanyards started being used for combat situations such as having a pistol and a lanyard tied to a soldier's wrist to prevent them from having to grope for it in the middle of the night in case an enemy approached.
Similarly they were used to help carry pistols while riding horses to prevent them from having to reach into their holster as the enemy approached and perhaps cause the pistol to fall down to the ground.
The simplest modern analogy is to take a digital camera. Normally people have a line that they wear around their necks to prevent the camera from falling off. Lanyards take that same basic principle and applies it to any other device or tool. Whether it be a music player, or a survival bag, that's generally the purpose of a lanyard.
Lanyards by themselves do not have any real use, it's only when they are used in conjunction with other tools that their utility becomes fully realized. They enhance the use of said tools. By buying and testing them out for yourself, you are bound to find new ways of using this tool.
