Turning regular everyday household products into art is not as impossible as it sounds. In fact, it’s a great way to reuse things that would otherwise end up in the trash. There is no limit to what you can do. The key to good craft work is to avoid placing any restrictions on what can realistically be accomplished. Make use of that junk you just never look at anymore before it finds its way to the garbage.

A piece of furniture that is showing its age can be decorated to add some new life to it. Use small cuts of stone or marble to create a new surface for the table top. Using furniture glue, glue the pieces on so that they are pressed against one another in a unique pattern. Be sure that there are no gaps in between where liquid could spill down. An alternative to using stone would be photographs. Doing the table top in a collage of family pictures really brings memories to life. It also makes a wonderful gift idea.

Cans are recyclable but they are also reusable. A small tuna can doubles great as a pin cushion. Decorate the outside before placing something soft like a small sponge inside to stick the pins into. Another nice use for the tuna can is as a storage space for scrub pads that are used on dishes. It’s important to wash the can out thoroughly before you use it for anything.

Old t-shirts that are never worn anymore can be turned into a variety of different things. Tie dye them just for fun using an assortment of fabric dyes. This remains popular among kids especially. They can also be sewn into a pillow, using the picture on the front of the shirt as the part of the pillow that faces out. Try stuffing cotton or feathers inside for the stuffing. If the t-shirt is not in good enough shape for these things, turn it into a cleaning rag.

Another great item that can be used for cleaning is a toothbrush. Of course it is already used for cleaning teeth but why stop there? An old toothbrush still has many uses before it hits the garbage. It makes the perfect grout cleaner when it comes to getting in between tiles for a good scrub. It’s also a handy tool to throw in the kid’s craft bin for painting.

Plastic containers like the ones that margarine comes in can be easily reused for many things. Make them a part of craft time by poking holes, decorating or making it into a storage container for sequins or glitter. Sturdy plastic containers should never be put in the garbage. It’s a waste of great material not to mention hazardous to the environment. Challenge yourself and your children to see how many uses you can come up with for one household item. You just might surprise yourself. Reusing household items benefits everyone and can be a lot of fun too. It’s something that everyone should make a habit of doing.
