New to scrapbooking and not sure what to buy?  Do you love scrapbooking but can't decide on which supplies to buy?  Then scrapbook kits are perfect for you!  There are many different types of kits, in a wide range of prices.  As a general rule, the more supplies that a kit contains, the more expensive it will be.  One type of kit is a complete kit, which offers everything you need to make a scrapbook.  You can also find theme, calendar, starter, journal and card making kits.  Here's a brief summary of what supplies to expect with each kit.

If you come across a kit, which claims to offer everything you need, take a closer look at the contents.  A complete kit should include the basics, such as:

  • An album (the kit should state the size of the album);
  • A wide variety of sheets of paper (the paper should be the same size as the album and should have both pattern and solid coloured paper);
  • Embellishments (the kit should list what the embellishments are, such as fibers, buttons, brads, charms);
  • Theme related stickers or rub-ons (the kit should state how many sheets are included);
  • A retractable knife;
  • A self-healing cutting mat;
  • One or more pens (such as a journaling pen);
  • Decorative scissors; and
  • Adhesives (photo corners, glue dots, etc.).

A theme kit is based on a central theme, such as a birthday, wedding or new baby.  It usually only includes the paper and stickers or rub-ons, but can include more, so check the list of contents when buying this type of kit.  The most important thing to remember is that all of the items included are colour coordinated and related to the theme.

Calendar kits come in two variations.  One type is to record a special event, such as baby's first year.  Simply choose the theme and add pictures and embellishments.  Use journaling to record special memories and milestones.  The second type is to record the events of the year.  Each month of the year has its own layout, so all you need to do is to add photos, journaling and embellishments.  Quick and easy!

Starter kits have everything that you need to get started.  They also often include books with ideas for layouts or instructions on how to get started.  They should contain an album, paper, embellishments, stickers, rub-ons, a journaling pen, decorative scissors and adhesives.  The main difference between a starter kit and a complete kit is that the started kit won't include some of the more advanced tools, such as retractable knives and cutting mats.

Journal kits allow you to dress up and personalize both the cover and the inside of a journal.  A journal should be as unique as the person writing in it.  The kits contain one or more journals, journaling pencils or pens, a sheet of alphabet tiles and embellishments such as fibers, brads, charms and more.

Card making kits may include such supplies as blank cards, tags, stickers, accents and even small pieces of paper - perfect for making your own cards.  Just make sure to read the list of supplies that are included in the kit.  Sometimes card kits may not include the cards, but don't let that discourage you from buying the kit.  You can easily get packs of cards at your local office store.  Another option is to use the stickers, quotes, phrases and borders in the kit to dress up blank cards, which have pictures on the front, but nothing inside the card.
