Many businesses will now allow you to send them a picture, which they will convert to a cross stitch pattern just for you.  The most important element is the photo you select to be converted.  Not all pictures will make a good looking cross stitch pattern.  Some pictures are too dark, have too many shadows or have too much going on in the photo.

Here are the top four tips to consider when selecting your picture:

1) Look at Colour Contrast

When choosing a picture, make sure that the subject is not a similar colour as the background.  For example, if the subject in the photo is a person with black or dark brown hair and the background is dark, then this will not make a good pattern.  Take a few minutes to look at the photo and see if there is good contrast between colours.  If you can see where the person's hair stops and the wall starts then this picture will work.

2) Bright Daylight and Shadows

The best results are obtained from clear photographs taken in bright natural daylight.  The problem with daylight is that it creates shadows and reflections, which will seem unnatural and harsh in a cross stitch pattern.  Examine your photo carefully.  Look for reflections on things like cars and on water.  Look for shadows on large objects, faces and clothing.  For example, a face in shadow will look darker than the person in real life.  A white house photographed in shade will look grey.

3) Seeing Details In Faces

When choosing a picture with people in it, you will want to be able to recognize those people in the cross stitch pattern.  If there are too many people in the photo, you will not see the detail in their faces.  This is clearly one case where less is better.  The best way to explain it is, the detail must be clearly seen in the picture otherwise you won't see it in the finished pattern.

4) Colour Versus Black And White Photos

Does it matter if the picture is black and white or if it is in colour?  No.  If you follow the tips above, then any picture you select will make a beautiful pattern.

If you still aren't sure if your photo is a good candidate for converting it to a cross stitch pattern, just ask.  Most businesses will look at the picture for free and will let you know whether or not they can create a cross stitch pattern from it.
