The recession combined with an inflation is causing many financial problems. Some have lost their jobs and homes. Energy costs and food prices have risen. People that once were comfortable are now forced to make big changes. This is a fictional story of one person that has been forced to find a roommate in order to survive. It could become very real if the economy does not quickly recover.
Sharing my apartment with a stranger is almost impossible to do after I have become accustomed to living alone for years. But due to many new expenses like a raise in rent and the rising cost of food I need a roommate to help pay the bills. There are many people that also would like to share expenses so finding one is not difficult, but finding the right person to share my apartment with is a big problem.
Getting used to sharing my toilet is not easy to do after I have been accustomed to using it whenever the moment arises. Now I would have to wait until the other person is finished and that can at times seem like forever. There can be no agreement to solve the problem because when nature calls I just have to listen. But before my roommate would use the shower it would be important for me to know that the toilet will not be available for awhile. Keeping the toilet bowl, floor and shower walls clean is a task that should be easily shared because it is important for hygienic purposes. Now that I have spoken about the problems of sharing a toilet lets go into the other rooms.
Food in the refrigerator has to be separated. Having the other person eating the food I paid for would be defeating the purpose of cutting my food bills. The way I would do this is by marking every item. That method would stop all confusion and hopefully it would be respected. Dishes must be cleaned after they are used and if a meal is shared one does the washing and the other the drying.
Keeping the noise level low is extremely important if I want to sleep. The best way to do this is by my roommate using earphones when listening to music. The sound on the TV must be adjusted to a reasonable level and lowered during the night. Noisy friends or wild parties will give me a headache and are not permissible. I will allow smoking even if I am a non smoker but cigarette ashes must not be dropped on the floor. The share of the rent must be paid on time without any excuses.
Rental costs are very high and still climbing, having a stranger share my expenses could make life much easier. But finding the right person to share a large part of my life is difficult. Desperation can cause a person to accept the worst kind of roommate, those that do are very unfortunate. I am not yet that desperate but if my expenses get any higher I will be.
