Painting and coating your garage floor is one way to clean up your garage and make it a real part of a home. A filthy garage filled with broken stuff and stacked boxes doesn't make your house feel like like a welcoming place, and your garage is the first thing you see as you step out of your car when you arrive home.

Clearing up the mess in your garage with organizers and cabinets would certainly clear up some space. But it is usually not enough. Clearing up the clutter would expose more of your garage floor, and, as garages go, the floor may be faded and cracked. Would you want to go home to a place like this?

For this reason, we have garage floor coatings available. Popular garage floor coatings or paint are epoxy coating, acid stain, and the clear sealer.

Epoxy coatings are popular for being impact-resistant. It also makes your floor dust-free and easy to clean, and also has slip resistance. Acid stain is popular due to its finished look. It gives your floor a marble-like appearance with its beautiful blend and color patterns. The clear sealer acts like the epoxy coating, giving your floor a fresh new look. It protects your floor from abrasions and hard impacts while making your floor shiny and new.

Application of the garage floor paint or coating and maintaining it requires patience and effort. The initial step in applying the coating is to prepare and clean your floor. It should be free of dust, stains, cracks, and holes.

Sweep the floor and clean the area thoroughly. Use bleach mixtures or other stain removers to make sure you get the stains off the floor. Allow the mixture to soak for a while before scrubbing the stain off with a stiff-bristle brush.  After removing the stains, rinse the whole area well with water.

After removing the stains, its time to take care of the cracks. Wait for the floor to dry before patching up the cracks and holes. For the small cracks, use concrete or mortar-repair compound. For the larger ones, use concrete patches.

Afterwards, check and etch the surface of the floor in case the pores of the concrete are opened. Sprinkle a small quantity of water on the surface and see if the concrete absorbs the water or not. If it does, then there is no need for you to etch the surface. If you have to etch it, make sure that it is dry first.

In applying a primer coat (as in the case of epoxy coating), use a long-handled paint roller and let it dry for 8 hours or more before applying the epoxy.

In applying the coating or paint, it is recommended that you use nylon brushes. As for the roller covers, they should be lint-free and water resistant. Remember to wear eye protection and protective gloves when applying and painting. You should also see to it that the area you're working on is well-ventilated.

You might also want to apply heavier coats on areas that you're sure will have heavy traffic.

These are the basics of what you have to do in order to prepare and apple garage floor painting or coating to your garage floor. It is still advised that you consult with experts on the kind of concrete coating you want to use, and how to best apply it.
