We’ve all had to do it at some point or another, whether it’s because we’re broke, exhausted, passed out, or a combination of all three. Crashing on couches is a time-honored tradition, expressing our need for a comfortable place to relax at all times. Given the choice between a luxury sedan and a beat-up sofa, we’re going to take the sofa. Because, whether we know it or not, that sofa is what gives us that good support and comfort throughout the entire night.

Sofas vary in shapes and sizes, from pristine and plushy to old and lumpy. The key is to crash on one with a proper support system. Otherwise, you might as curl up on the floor. S-shaped or zigzag wire springs hold up the longest and provide the best support. Coil spring systems are even better, since they’re handmade and tied directly to the sofa frame. Sofas made from elastic won’t hold up over time, and are bound to be uncomfortable when you sit on them. Padded chair arms are also a good feature to look for, since when you’re crashing a couch, it’s unlikely you happened to bring along a pillow. Sturdy chair arms will support your head so you’re not forced to wake up with lines on your face from the seat cushions.

Sofa beds seem like the perfect solution. Although they’re not as cushy as a regular mattress, sofa beds are beds nonetheless; take advantage while you can. Some require you to take out the seat cushions and pull the bed frame out, which can get complicated late at night. Others let you push the back cushion down like a futon, except with more padding. So while a sofa bed may not resemble a real bed, it’s a good enough substitute when you’re crashing. They’re also more commonly found in either smaller homes where there’s not much space for an extra bed, or in a house that always has company (five bucks says your grandmother has a sofa bed, and someone is sleeping on it right now). Try to get a hold of some extra pillows just to be on the safe side.

Remember to always thank the person whose couch you crashed on. There may be a time again in the future when you need their comfortable couch services, and the last thing you want is to be kicked to the curb. Also, before you grow hesitant that a friend needs to borrow your sofa, recall all those times you borrowed theirs. Share the love, people — after all, you may need to crash their couch again very soon, like at next weekend’s bachelor party.
