Many home buyers struggle to find properties that are in the location they want, at a price they can afford, and with enough space to move around in. In order to satisfy their needs for location and price, buyers often compromise when it comes to square footage, and can end up in a tight squeeze.

Nothing can drive a homeowner mad more quickly than living in a home that is simply too small. Lack of storage space and furniture limitations can all lead to feeling that the walls are closing in. To prevent feeling cramped without having to build an extension, you must plan your interior carefully, and work with the architecture of the home rather than against it.

Paint can work wonders on any room, especially tiny ones. By giving all the interior walls a fresh coat of white or neutral paint, you can instantly open up the space and make the room seem larger. Always stick with light colors, and stay far away from patterned wallpaper.

When selecting furniture, choose minimalist styles. Clean lines reduce visual clutter, so stay away from overstuffed or frilly sofas and chairs. Continue this theme with the window treatments as well, and use either classically sleek blinds, or simple and chic curtains.

Be sure to keep your home's dimensions in mind when looking at the size of individual furniture pieces. A large, billowy couch may be comfortable to lie on, but it will overwhelm the space and make the room feel crowded and uninviting. Instead, go for furniture that is small enough to fit the space, but is still comfortable to sit on. Armless sofas for instance, can appear smaller than regular couches, but are still perfect for relaxing. Go for light colored fabrics and keep prints to a minimum. You can always punch up the room with bright accent pillows and throws.

For accessories, use clear pieces. Your line of sight will be unobstructed as you look around the room, which will help expand the amount of visible space and make the room appear more open. In addition, mirrors can do wonders for small spaces. Splurge on a large mirror that can act as both an attractive centerpiece, as well as double the visual size of the space instantly.

In the kitchen, where storage space is at a premium, opt for tall shelves and cupboards rather than wide ones. They will take up much less usable surface area, while not compromising on storage capacity.

Another space saving idea is to install secret doors that can double as shelving units. These doors give you much needed storage that is stylish and practical, in addition to keeping certain areas of your home private. Fun and functional, secret doors are a unique way to make small spaces work for you.
