A few years ago, I was searching for a shower gift for a friend of mine. Both bride-to-be and groom-to-be had been married previously and had been homeowners. They had toasters and towels and pretty, romantic candleholders. They didn't actually need much of anything, truth be told.

In my shopping travels, I stumbled across scrapbook kits. They had kits for all occasions, including weddings. Right away, I was enchanted with it as a gift idea.

Scrapbooking has become exceedingly popular in recent years. It's a wonderful way to preserve the memories of special occasions in a personal way. Because of that, scrapbooks make wonderful gifts, and what better occasion to give such a gift than the occasion of a wedding, when two people are about to embark on a new life together?

The great thing about scrapbooks and their potential as gifts, is the variety of supplies and choices. For those folks who aren't familiar with crafting and who might find giving such a gift daunting, there are pre-made kits (like the one I purchased) that include everything you need to begin. These kits can even be found specifically themed toward certain occasions, such as a new baby or a wedding and are accessorized accordingly.

Moreover, a scrapbooking gift is rich in possibilities. Most of the larger craft retailers have at least one aisle (and often more) dedicated solely to scrapbook supplies and other paper crafts.

If you've make the decision to give a scrapbook as a wedding or bridal shower gift, you'll want to take a trip to your favorite craft retailer. Though scrapbooks can be found for purchase at major greeting card stores, photo stores and even department stores, you'll still find the best selection at a craft store or a retail store with a large craft department.

Scrapbooks come in a myriad of different sizes and shapes, from small, 4 X 6 albums, to others more akin to the shape and size of larger, coffee-table books. The price ranges are equally varied, so your gift budget will be an additional factor. But beyond that, the possibilities are endless -- texture, color, personalization, binding style, etcetera.

With your scrapbook itself chosen, it's time to go ahead and accessorize. Scrapbook accessories are nearly limitless with a bit of creative thinking. You'll find the basic accessories and necessities in the craft store's scrapbook and paper craft aisle. You'll find many that are geared in color and theme to weddings.

You can even choose the paper that forms the actual scrapbook's pages. These days just selecting the paper can be fun. Packages of paper in assorted colors and designs are available in varying sizes. Note that some scrapbooks don't come with paper included for pages, so double check your selection. If your chosen scrapbook doesn't come with its own pages, be sure to match the paper dimensions to the album's dimensions so your gift recipient will be able to get started without a trip to the craft store of their own..

Additional packages of smaller papers in varying shapes can be purchased, and they make nice mats and backgrounds to compliment photographs and other keepsakes. Many craft retailers also display specialty papers which are available for purchase in individual sheets. You can mix and match to your heart's content. Truly, many of the papers you'll find are beautiful and unique. They, too, vary in price.

Other essentials include rubber stamps and stamp pads, stickers, and photo-safe markers. Consider hole-punches that create shapes such as stars or hearts, and don't forget glitter pens, specialty scissors for creating artistic edges on paper, and assorted trims and item tags. Don't forget the basics, too, such as glue sticks, photo corners, and double-stick tape. Plus, consider including a few rolls of film, or maybe a disposable digital camera, and a gift card for photo-processing?

For someone with a little more money to spend, your options are even greater. Consider software for designing scrapbook pages on a home computer, or even digital cameras and photo printers.

Give the gift of scrapbooking some serious thought for the bride-to-be. It's a fun and functional gift with a lot of heart.
