If you have a teen in trouble, as their parent you will be worried. Just how worried depends on what precisely is wrong with your child and why. There are so many areas in which teens can go off the rails today. They could be involved in drugs, alcohol, crime, depression, weight gain or loss, promiscuity, ADHD and more. What you want are several things and pretty much in this order.
- Assessment
- Resources
- Treatment
Seeing your son or daughter run into trouble is not nice but things can change. It is possible to help the young person overcome their problem and make a fresh start. Millions of teens do just that every year.
The first step is a proper assessment. Start with your family doctor. Remember there are two parts to the assessment process - finding out what is wrong and why.
You can't help your teen as well as you might or even at all unless you have an accurate diagnosis. This applies with any visit to a doctor. What are the symptoms and why are they occurring?
Your family doctor is a great starting point. He or she may be able to pinpoint the problem and its cause but, if not, the doctor can refer you and your teen to a specialist. You see the key is not just to find out what is wrong but why. You need to know what is causing the problem.
Once the diagnosis is complete you are in a position to start looking at available resources. Now there are several broad areas of help which can be listed as follows;
- Day care therapy sessions
- Residential care therapy sessions
- You and your family
Therapy as an out-patient means your teen remains living with his or her family and receives the treatment locally in a clinic or from a private health professional. So long as the therapy is the correct one for the patient and is the best you can find, then there are definite benefits.
You won't have far to travel, you can keep an eye on your teen and the cost of one-off sessions will be less, maybe much less, that any therapy in a residential program.
Then there are the residential therapy places, camps of various types and boarding schools. Here your child lives in and tackles all sorts of activities which include relevant and high-quality therapy. Once again the counseling must be directly related to the needs of your teen and the service provided must be of the highest quality.
Sometimes a residential center is the best or even the only option for your child. They are cared for 24/7 and can find their life dramatically altered with new friends and new skills.
Finally an excellent resource could be you, the parent. If the problem encountered by your son or daughter can be fixed by spending time with you, quality time with the parents, then take the advice of the health professionals and start sharing even more love with your son or daughter.

One of my recent coaching clients a couple of weeks ago was telling me about the holiday they wanted to take with their kids over the school holidays. All together they have a family of four - one girl and three boys, three of which are over the age of twelve, with a girl having a 'romance' with a guy at school, which made it even more difficult to decide on a mutual holiday duration and destination. So I decided to cover this topic in this week's article: Holiday Tips with Teens!
