After the baby is born, life as you have known it with your significant other has come to an end. Parents are often exhausted or busy with baby and neglect to spend any quality time together. But just as it is important to nurture your baby, it is also important to nurture your relationship with your significant other. Take time for each other, since happy parents equal happy children. It may be hard to get away together initially, so take advantage of those rare moments like when baby is sleeping to have dinner together or to talk to one another about something other than baby! As your baby gets older, be sure and find someone you trust to take care of your child, so that both of you can get away even for just a couple of hours. Here are some ideas to stay connected:
- It’s amazing how just a simple dinner alone together without children can rejuvenate your relationship. Try going out for a bite to eat or even a cup of coffee to chat.
- See an afternoon movie on the weekend and have an early dinner afterward. That way you can have family time with your kids in the morning before you go and still be home around their bedtime. The baby-sitter could have them ready in their pajamas with their teeth brushed, and you could tuck them in bed. Then, you can get to sleep at a reasonable hour, too!
- Go out in the evening after the kids have gone to bed. You can be together as a family during the dinner hour and not lose that time together.
- Spend an evening together without spending money if you are on a tight budget. Browse through a bookstore together or take a walk.
- If you have to stay in make the most of your time together. Keep the TV set off in the evenings. You are much more likely to talk with each other when there are no distractions.
- Take a walk together in the evenings. If you can’t go alone, then put the baby in the stroller. Even if you are too tired to talk, it will help you feel closer to each other.
- Spend 10 minutes every evening talking about each other's day. Even if you don't have a chance to see each other that much, you will at least know what the other person has been doing.
- Eat breakfast together in the morning. Even if you are rushed and only have 10 minutes, sitting together at the table will make you feel like you are starting your day as a team.
- Talk with each other once each day on the telephone. A five-minute conversation helps couples connect and will be time well spent.
- Do something special for your significant other to let them know you care. You could surprise them with a small gift or flowers. Or better yet, leave them a little love note to find later. Sometimes just the smallest things can keep you connected.
