We express ourselves in many ways and decorations for parties or holidays are one of the most common forms of self expression. A modest home becomes a vine covered cottage with the right decorations while an austere mansion can be modernized and takes on the personality of its inhabitants with the addition of colorful decorations.

Streamers, paper centerpieces, confetti and paper party goods can all be coordinated with other decorations. Themed parties can be elaborate with little cost when enough time and effort are applied. Simple cardboard or plywood panels can be painted to depict any locale and the purchased decorations can be matched to the mural's scene. With this small effort a party is located in a wood, a foreign city or a distant planet. Only the imagination limits the theme.

Painting a mural of a snow with pine trees can evoke just the right mood for a Christmas party. Caroling or crafting will be a natural when the decorations support this scene. Other possibilities can be very simple but just as effective. For those with less confident art skills the printer can be used to enlarge a photograph to several panels which make good templates. Many printers have a poster feature which will work great for this purpose.

The large objects can be cut out and traced on the mural panels and then painted. The rest of the scene can be painted free hand with poster paints or acrylics, which dry quickly without odor. When the image is painted onto several narrow panels of thin plywood they can be hinged with simple hand tools and cabinet hardware. This mural would be great anywhere in the room but would be especially useful as a divider between various areas. The buffet table might be separated from the dance floor in the area normally called the basement.
