Tiaras: History and Trivia for Party Games
Tiaras have historically been recognized as a symbol of rank and honor. Grecian artisans created tiaras as embellishments for statutes of the Gods and priests. In addition, Greek leaders would award tiaras to people of high rank or winners of competitions or contests of many different sorts. These people would then be allowed to wear the tiaras at special occasions to denote their accomplishments among their fellow citizens. Ancient Egyptian mummies have been discovered wearing tiaras as an symbol of the royal standing the buried individual had at the time of death.
For the past several centuries, tiaras have been part of the fashion palette of those members of the upper echelon of societies. This movement seems to have begun during the period of Napoleon wherein tiaras were worn by women of the court. The style of tiaras at this time were similar to those worn in ancient Rome in that the designs were simple yet symmetrical with natural elements of decoration such as olive leaves or laurel branches. Throughout the 19th Century, however, the move toward design included delicate yet jewel laden displays in the tiara designs. As Queen Victoria, France and the Grand Duchesses of Russian aristocracy continued to wear tiaras, they also encouraged grander displays of wealth, power and luxury be evident in the final design thus clearly demonstrating that the wearer of the tiara was a member of high status in their respective society.
Today, tiaras are often associated with weddings and pageants. The designers and artists responsible for the tiaras today use breathtaking materials and innovative designs to create pieces that add a dazzling flourish of prominence and beauty to the wearer. Instead of denoting royalty or status, tiaras are now once again a fashion accessory that emphasizes design, craftsmanship and beauty. Many that are worn at weddings or other special occasions are designed with the specific intent to convert the piece into an heirloom necklace or other piece after the initial use as a tiara in order to leave the owner with a beautiful reminder of the special day.
