We Were Children Once

Another Tuesday, another 14th November, another day of a year. What could be so special about this particular 24 hours? We could just live it like any other day. But no, it wouldn't be right because deservingly, it's children's day. And you can't just let it slip by like that. Not when children have given us so many smiles, so many reasons to believe, so many things to learn from without ever letting a frown cross our troubled faces because it's magically hard to sulk when they are around.

Our world's merely not complete without their presence. Imagine our streets are deserted in the evenings with no sounds of happy cries and laughter, imagine playgrounds are empty, imagine you never get to see them around, just to set some curve on your face when you are helplessly annoyed. Children, for all the reasons we know, have captured our attention, our love and our concern. They are the pillars our society will rely on some years from now and how little do we realize the part they play in our lives. Besides the amount of joy they can give us even without trying, children hold a significant place in our world today like they have always held.

And what can we offer them on a special day like this? When it's set apart to be celebrated, it's meant to be celebrated. And probably, there will be beautiful memories that this day will carry. Schools doing their bit to entertain them, perhaps distributing sweets, and organising programmes for them. Sure, they will be glad. What more can they ask for. But is that all we can give them? Is it just a day of smiles we can afford for children who are our pride, our joy, our mood lifter, our teacher in the sweetest way possible, almost our everything who can turn even the ugliest day with a simple smile into a lovely day, an innocent face, a cute look and you know the kind of affection that they are capable of giving.

Time gives way to so many things. Without knowing, the children here today will be grown even before you can really capture them fully in your memory. Would you want to regret someday for the things you could give them and failed to do so? The attachment with children is probably the easiest thing we will ever come across. You meet a new kid today, and it needs no introduction from someone else. You know you already have bonded, could be even without words. Just a smile would do. Their expression is beyond explanation. The magic that they can set on your face any moment of the day is amazing.

Children may not need anything more because they never are some discontented lot like us. They happily dwell on what they have. It doesn't matter where they live, they are just happy under the care of their parents. They do not envy. Just admiringly satisfied. Never worried, never jealous, never cruel. Only pure innocence, without pretence, full of life, never fearing what's to come because they have never wronged anyone. Their lives are enviable. But they enter the cruel world to see all kinds of corruption taking place. It's sadly true. Yet it's inevitable.

One thing we can do is teach them well because what they learn in childhood will always be significant. Those values will follow them when they are ready to take on the world. Sometimes children become our very life. Some parents love them to death. Well, they are doing their part. But what if they are spoilt rotten? Many are unable to change their ways today because they were too pampered when they were small. Comforts are necessary but what if you give them too much? Out of love we could do anything. Yes, anything out of excess. But draw the limit because children will be the sufferers later on.

And while we talk about having excess, enough and more, it is sad to think that not all the children are privileged enough. More than a million of them are wandering in the streets homeless. Many minors working for a living. Some left just like that by their parents. Some too poor to lead a normal childhood. But they are used to it. Still okay with the idea of living life that way. There is probably nothing much we can do to change their lives because we almost don't have the power. But perhaps, some occasions or days will give you a chance to bless their lives. Never forget to make use of the opportunity because you will be lighting up a life.

Children's day will be gone in 24 hours. But the special parts of the day will remain in the memory. What better day to show them your love without spoiling them! Even if you do not have one in the family to celebrate the day for, why not go find a kid and make his/her day? Because, it's once in a year and it's true, one moment of goodness will make a Huge difference. We all were children once. Maybe you can look back and think of your own childhood. Find the moments where you were happiest. It's time you pass on those joys to the children who are here today. Someday, years from now, they can trace back the beautiful memory. I'm sure they will remember to bring some joy to the children of tomorrow then. And perhaps gleefully say, we were children once when we were greeted with such joys.

In my twenties ~ that wavy age where times seem hardest, yet very adventurous too. You are not too young niether old. Deciding phases, getting serious kind of phase where Life brings you a lot of tides to ride. But i love every moment of it. I love the lovely times i can count on, even the ugliest of situations. They make me a better person. With dreams in my pocket, seeing them taking buds am gonna do all i can let them take their flight. Someday i hope to see them flowered and be happy enough that for once i did something worth celebrating. And that's gonna be Life. M celebrating every moment of it.

I live in India, in its Capital City. I write for a weekly column for a Newspaper. I love doing it all. I love writing. I love my home town. It's a hilly place. And I wish to make a difference in my life's journey.
